Frew: It would be scandalous if we miss out
Matt Frew believes it will be scandalous if his Barkingside team do not win a trophy this season.
Frew feels his side still have a chance to win the Essex Senior League or the League cup, as they prepare for a derby with Barking this weekend.
“It would be scandalous if we don’t win a trophy this season because the boys deserve it,” he said.
“Either the League or the League Cup should be on our table at the end of the season, and I’ll be disappointed if we don’t win a trophy.
“We drew with Burnham in the first leg and the night needs to be kind, but we think we can go through.”
Barkingside are currently fourth in the table but Frew and his team have not ruled out winning the title.
He added: “I’m not ruling the title out, but only thinking of the game ahead and that’s Barking.
“Win that game and hopefully other teams around us drop points and we’ll see. You never know in football we could catch Burnham.
“You look at Ryman Division One North. Maldon were flying and now Grays have caught them to, it’s a funny old game.
“I believe in the boys, we all believe we can achieve something special this season and the talk is that we will win a trophy.”
Barkingside will be playing at least two games a week until the end of the season.
And Frew admits he is envious of the facilities available to Burnham and Great Wakering.
“You need a decent pitch and I’m not blaming our pitch, but it’s not one of the best in the league,” added Frew.
“You look at Burnham and Wakering and they’ve played a few more games than us because they’ve got better facilities, and pitches that can hold water better.
“It’s frustrating on a Saturday when teams above you are playing and you’re left at home scratching your head.”
The league normally finishes in April but has been extended to May 4 and Frew has been told it could be extended even further.
“When I was a player I liked playing as much as I could, obviously resting is important but I’ve got a good squad of 22/23 players here,” said Frew.
“There is lots of talk that the league will be extended and we’ve got a fixture on May 4.
“The chairman thinks it might get extended a further week, if that is the case, a fixture pile-up might not be an issue.”
