Essex Open’s under-19s competed in the England Championships last weekend and finished with two victories.

Seven teams entered the competition, which was held at Redbridge, and various close battles occurred. The event was run on a round-robin basis and Essex started against Birmingham-based side Bar Beacon.

In a tight contest, Essex managed to always stay in front and earned themselves an 18-16 success. Oaksway were up next, but they demonstrated their class by sealing a 19-8 triumph after starting well.

A poor start cost Essex in their next clash against Oldham and at half time they were 14-3 down. That advantage would prove too much for Essex to overturn as they eventually suffered a 22-8 loss.

The next match against Telstars was more competitive, though, and end-to-end in the first period. At the break Essex were trailing by three, but unfortunately after half time they couldn’t get back on level terms and were beaten 19-13.

Thoroughbreds were up next in the penultimate game of the tournament for Essex. A competitive first period saw Essex come in leading 9-8 and three goals in quick succession put them in control after the break, enabling them to earn a 19-14 triumph – their second success of the day.

In Essex’s final fixture they faced Weston Park Blades, the eventual winners of the event. Although a tough clash was expected, Essex produced some of their best netball of the day in the opening half.

When they came in at the break they were trailing 7-5, but had real hope of causing an upset. But the second half would be a different story as the champions took control of the game.

Park piled on the pressure and Essex were unable to cope and eventually ended the tournament with a 17-8 defeat.

“Although Essex only won two games and lost four, the team had an enjoyable day and were pleased to be back together,” said a club spokesperson.

*A member of the Essex Open squad in action at the England Under-19 Championships has been selected to represent London and the South East this weekend.

Madeline Oshodi helped Open’s under-19s win two of their six matches at the tournament held in Redbridge last weekend.

And now she is preparing for a trip to Sheffield where she will compete in a Netball Performance Foundation League tournament.

The NPFL brings together the best under-17 netball players in the country and provides them with a high-pressure and high-intensity environment.

This year’s tournament takes place in Sheffield and Oshodi will be flying the flag for Essex Open at the event.

A statement on the official club website read: “Congratulations to Madeline Oshodi who has been selected to represent London and the South East Region at the NPFL tournament in Sheffield.”
