Woodford Wells went down against Hadleigh in their latest Essex League Division One outing at Monkhams Lane.

The visitors chose to bat first and openers Paul Tibbenham (42) and Oliver Smith (124) got them off to a strong start.

Wells skipper Jonathan Gaffney (2-44) had some success with the ball, along with Nabel Shaikh, Chris Hall and Tanveer Shah as Hadleigh closed on 284-6.

But the home side saw Shah, Joe Johnson (28) and Mitch McGee (27) fall after making useful starts in reply.

Ex Buxton held firm, hitting two sixes and nine fours in an entertaining 86 off 79 deliveries, but Wells were always up against it as Anthony Grosvenor (4-43) shone with the ball for Hadleigh.

Wells were eventually dismissed for 237 in the 47th over and find themselves in sixth place on 97 points as the season reaches its midway mark, 28 points adrift of a promotion place.

Gaffney’s men got to Harlow next weekend.
