Stand-in captain Gareth James saw his team dig in for a draw at home to Gidea Park & Romford last weekend

Woodford Wells will attempt to get their campaign up and running on Saturday when they visit rivals Hainault & Clayhall in the Essex League Division One.

With Jon Gaffney still away, Gareth James will continue to skipper the side and be eager to inspire a first league win of the season this weekend.

Last Saturday Wells had to dig in to earn a draw at home to Gidea Park & Romford, but they could only come away with six points which places them second from bottom.

The visitors won the toss at Monkhams Lane and batted first with George Rogers and Jamal Francis putting on 144 for the third wicket.

Rogers made 118 and Gidea Park captain Francis 70 as the away side scored 292-7 from 50 overs despite the best efforts of Mustifa Kamal (2-45) and Nabel Shaikh (2-41).

In reply, Wells made a good start, but once openers Robert Marshall (37) and Tanveer Shah (44) went, wickets began to tumble quickly.

Fortunately Hywel Jones (36) and Farzand Shah (30*) stuck around to earn a draw.
