Essex League Premier Division: Wanstead (184-4) beat Southend-on-Sea (181 a/o) by six wickets

Kishen Velani scored a stunning century to help Wanstead defeat Southend-on-Sea in the Essex League Premier Division and keep the pressure on leaders Hornchurch.

Joe Ellis-Grewal’s men chased down 182 to win with minimum fuss to maintain their grip on second place heading into the final four weeks of the season.

Southend won the toss at Overton Drive and batted first, but lost Oliver Wagstaff early to Velani (1-39).

Lewis Wright and Charlie Lockhurst then put on 108 for the second wicket and at this stage looked on course for a big score.

Jahanasher Akbar had the former pinned lbw though, six short of his hundred to spark a huge collapse.

Aron Nijjar dismissed Lockhurst soon after, and claimed figures of 3-33 to help give Wanstead the upper hand.

Akbar continued to impress and eventually finished with 5-33 off nine overs as the away side were all out for 181.

Wanstead lost Arfan Akram (4) early in their chase, but Velani and Feroze Khushi put on 50 for the second wicket before the latter was out for 18 and Robin Das followed him back to the pavilion quickly.

Captain Ellis-Grewal stuck around for a patient 19 off 42 balls while former Essex staffer Velani hit the ball to all corners.

The opener eventually finished 100 not out off only 62 balls to see Wanstead home in the 25th over.
