Defending champions Wanstead saw their lead at the top of the Essex League Premier Division cut to 10 points following defeat at Chingford.

Sent into the field after losing the toss, the Herons saw Zain Shahzad dismiss home skipper Alfie Taylor after a quickfire 26 off 22 balls.

But half-centuries from the second-wicket pairing of Ben MacGregor (57 off 86 balls) and Essex’s Jamie Porter (57 off 56) gave Chingford the opportunity to go on and reach 256, as Shahzad (4-33) returned for a second spell to mop up the tail.

Captain Joe Ellis-Grewal (3-40) and Kishen Velani (2-55) also had success with the ball for Wanstead, but Hassan Chowdhury and Velani fell cheaply in reply.

Arfan Akram (36) and in-form Feroze Khushi (77) made good starts for Wanstead, with Tom Cummins (31) also chipping in, but Ellis-Grewal was left stranded on 40 as his side closed on 224-9.

Porter picked up 3-21 on a rare appearance for his former club, having played in Essex’s T20 Blast match with Surrey the previous night.
