Club’s trip supports Courtney Walsh Foundation
Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club are counting down the days until setting off on their second tour of Jamaica next week.
Club captain Arfan Akram recently visited the Jamaica High Commissioner in London and presented her with some cricket memorabilia as a token of their appreciation of her support for the February 12-23 tour which supports The Courtney Walsh Foundation.
The team will be playing five limited-overs matches against Lucas CC, Melbourne CC and the Treasure Beach Pirates Cricket Clubs, as well as being hosted by the British High Commission XI and playing a prison inmates XI at the Tower Street correctional facility.
Alongside these fixtures the touring party of 35 will be hosting coaching clinics for disadvantaged youngsters and disabled cricketers across the island.
Akram said: “2016 is a huge year for Wanstead Cricket Club, it is our 150th anniversary and no better way to start the celebrations then to a tour to Jamaica.
“This is no usual tour, as our main objective is to support Courtney Walsh’s Foundation. We have 35 members travelling, some travelled in the 2013 tour, but most are first-time tourists.
“Community work is the heartbeat of Wanstead Cricket Club, we really hope we can assist with helping those less fortunate. No doubt visiting the island will be a very special occasion and we look forward to enjoying everything Jamaica has to offer.”
While on island the team and its guests will play golf at Constant Spring Golf Club along with visits to key sporting cafes such as Cuddyz and Tracks and Records.
On the south coast the group will visit several attractions including Appleton Estate, YS Falls and The Black River Swamp Safari.
Ambassador Courtney Walsh said: “It gives me great pleasure that Wanstead Cricket Club are once again touring my beloved Jamaica to support my Foundation.
“I understand this time the trip is to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary, may I also extend my congratulations and look forward in celebrating in Jamaica together.
“The Foundation is very close to my heart, it gives me great joy how the Foundation works in giving opportunities to young Jamaicans. I have no doubt that Wanstead CC members will go home with great memories.”
