Captain delighted with Royal London One-Day Cup progress
Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate paid tribute to his squad after seeing them finish their Royal London One-Day Cup group with seven wins out of eight.
Half-centuries from openers Varun Chopra (83) and Alastair Cook (54) laid the foundations for a challenging total of 306-7 against bottom club Kent at Canterbury.
And the hosts slipped to 50-3 in 11 overs in reply, before rain ended hopes of any further play and Essex were named winners on the Duckworth Lewis method.
Victory ensured top spot in the south group, as main rivals Somerset saw their clash against Middlesex at Lord’s wiped out by the wet weather, and Essex will now host a semi-final against Somerset or Nottinghamshire next month.
Ten Doeschate said: “I think we’ve played beautifully throughout the campaign with a good number of guys stepping up at crucial times to win games for us.
“Like any good team, we’ve relied on a core group of players, and Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara and Tom Westley have stood out with the bat throughout.
“The bowling unit have interchanged well too, with Jamie Porter and the spinners comiing in to do fantastically for us.
“We’ve looked good in all compartments of our game and that’s probably why we’re going through to the semis as group winners.”
