South Woodford came up short at Wickford in their Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two encounter.

The home side chose to bat first but the 39-run opening stand between Chriag Desai and Chris Westwood (39) proved the best of their innings.

Jake McMullen (3-53) made the breakthrough for South Woodford, before Saihaj Jaspal (3-34) and Bradley Copper (3-37) combined down the order to help dismiss Wickford for 172.

Henry Blackwell fell cheaply in reply and Jamal Richards followed to leave the visitors 47-2.

But stand-in skipper Harry Neicho (24) put on 66 for the third wicket with opener Copper to raise hopes of success.

Neicho and Jamie Carroll fell to successive deliveries from Huzaifa Umer, though, and Copper was dismissed for 84, having hit a six and 13 fours in a 108-ball innings, to leave South Woodford 135-5.

And Wickford’s bowlers sensed their chance, with Connor Etchells and Desai running through the lower order to dismiss them for 163 in the 52nd over to complete a nine-run win.
