Boys finish first at London Youth Games finals at Lord’s

Redbridge boys won gold at the London Youth Games finals at Lord’s last weekend after some thrilling battles at the home of cricket.

Coach Mahesh Velani had targeted a medal at the event after they picked up a bronze in 2015 and qualified this time in style.

They faced Merton in the quarter-finals and scored 136 before restricting their opponents to 122 in reply.

In the last four they come up against local rivals Waltham Forest and chased down their total of 89 to ensure they would pick up at least silver from the competition.

But in the final Redbridge saw off the challenge of Hounslow, restricting them to 75 and knocking off the total confidently to claim gold.

It was an excellent return from Velani’s team and just reward for all the hard work they have put in.

The girls were also in action at Lord’s, but couldn’t get past the challenge of Bexley in the quarter-finals.

Saba Nasim’s side scored an impressive 110 in their last eight clash, but the south Londoners chased it down.

Bexley would go on to claim a bronze from the event while Redbridge played one more match against Harrow and struggled to 27 when trying to chase down 144.

It ensured Nasim’s girls finished seventh overall at the London Youth Games finals.
