Essex spinner Simon Harmer admitted it had been a ‘really good day’ afte4r hitting a century against county champions Surrey at the Oval.

South African Harmer shared a 167-run stand with Adam Wheater (68 retired hurt), after Tom Westley’s 134, as the 2017 champions piled up 477-8 declared, after skittling the home side for 67 on the first morning.

And Harmer finished unbeaten on 102 from 156 balls, having hit two sixes and 11 fours, before Surrey closed on 88-1 in their second innings.

Harmer said: “It was a really good day. Adam and I just tried to build a partnership and at first it was him hitting the gaps and I didn’t feel that good. It was just a case of trying to get in for me!

“He played really well and we are in a great position. Sadly he got that bad blow and even if there’s no fracture he won’t play any further part. Perhaps James Foster will get the chance to keep for a while before his retirement!

“I’ve just got to try to keep putting the ball in the right areas, and mix up my pace, as there is spin there now.”

Jamie Porter dismissed Rory Burns in the final session and Essex begin day three with a 322-run lead, looking to complete an innings win against their successors as Division One champions.

Surrey fast bowler Jade Dernbach said: “The pitch has flattened out and it is certainly not over yet. We would love to go through the championship season unbeaten so we have to bat through the day (Wednesday) and then see where we are.

“It was very pleasing to see the way the team kept going throughout the day and, from a personal point of view, great that I am still going fitness-wise on September 25 and getting through a lot of overs!”
