Upminster captain Ollie Peck was delighted to see his side claim a 10-run win over Woodford Wells in Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One at the weekend.

After having their six-game winning run ended by leaders Buckhurst Hill a week earlier, Upminster posted 214-8 from their 50 overs led by Shafiq Rahman (43), Farid Butt (38) and Nabeel Aziz (35).

And after relegation-threatened Wells made a strong start in reply, the visitors rallied in the field to defend their total and claim 25 points.

Peck said: “It was a strong win. They probably had more to play for than we did, won the toss and chose to chase.

“We batted pretty well at the start, Freddie whacked a few and we got ourselves into position when we were about 146-3 with about 11 overs to go and they bowled quite well to restrict us to 214.

“We felt that was about 10 short and they got off to a flyer, were 100-1 off 18 overs. “‘Fester’ (John Curtis) and Ejaz (Khan) didn’t bowl particularly well and we then got back into the game when we brought the slow bowlers on.”

Joe Johnson (63) and Robert Marshall (41) had put Wells on course, before Nabeel Aziz ran through their order to claim 6-33 from a 16-over spell.

And Peck paid tribute to his fellow spinner for his matchwinning haul, adding: “Nabeel bowled superbly. The pitch got worse as it was a used wicket and started to deteriorate and he bowled with good control and took wickets to stop them getting any partnerships.

“After we got the first two wickets we were taking a wicket every 10 runs. Fester came back on and cleaned up the number 11 with an over to spare for a 10-run win in a tight game.”

Victory leaves Upminster in fifth place with one game remaining, as promotion hopefuls Belhus visit next weekend.
