Essex batsman Varun Chopra returned to former club Oakfield Parkonians to hand out awards at their annual presentation evening.

The event was enjoyed by 110 players, family members and guests, with former Parks colt Chopra presenting the Vernon Thomas award for outstanding all-round contribution to the club to colts manager Andy Holland.

Chopra, who captained the England under-19 team and Warwickshire before returning to his home county, also gave the clubman of the year prize to Alan Bouquet.

Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, joined in the festivities after returning from Westminster and remarked on the progress the club is making on and off the field and how the facilities on Oakfield are used by the community as a whole, both as a sports and a social amenity.

Club spokesman Chris Nutt said: “It was marvellous too that local councillor Joyce Ryan made a passionate, impromptu speech to encourage everyone to stand up for Oakfield.

“It was a delightful evening with top players, administrators, politicians, families and children all mingling together.”
