After success in the 2016 competition, the local youngsters are hoping to impress again

Redbridge cricket coach Mahesh Velani is hoping his boys can claim another gold medal at the finals of the London Youth Games at Lord’s this weekend.

They triumphed on the big day at the home of cricket last year and they are looking to repeat that success on Sunday.

Velani’s talented group will take on local rivals Waltham Forest in the last-eight and, having beaten them in the semi-finals last year, they have plenty of belief they can repeat the trick again.

“We won it in 2016, so we are looking to defend our title and it should be a good, fun day like always,” said Velani.

“Everyone enjoys the occasion, so we are raring to go and we have some players left from the team which won it last year.

“Our victory against Waltham Forest in 2016 should give us a bit of confience ahead of the match this time around.

“It is a local derby and they have a similar team I believe, so hopefully it is a good game and we come out on top.

“We know that everybody will be trying to beat us on Sunday, so we have to stay on our toes.”

Redbridge’s girls are also at Lord’s and face Hammersmith & Fulham in the quarter-finals hoping to claim a medal.
