The first day of Essex’s crucial Specsavers County Championship match at Old Trafford was washed out by heavy rain.

With the outfield waterlogged, there was no prospect of any play against Division One title rivals Lancashire and play was abandoned for the day at lunchtime.

The game between the top two was due to start at 10.30am, but an early lunch was taken at noon and any hope of play on the first day was soon ended as the umpires inspected the sodden conditions with groundsman Matt Merchant and called it off at 12.50pm.

Essex have a 36-point lead over Lancashire at the top of the table and would be disadvantaged were this match to be completely ruined by rain.

Both sides have four matches to play in September as they attempt to secure the most prestigious trophy in domestic cricket and it remains unclear whether or not Pakistan international Mohammad Amir will play in the game.

Although he is recovering from a back spasm, Amir was named in Essex’s 14-man squad for the clash, but no decision has been made as to whether or not he will be in the XI that is eventually selected to play.
