Skipper says it’s close at the top ahead of meeting with promotion rivals Shenfield

Joe Johnson believes Woodford Wells’ clash at Shenfield on Saturday could go a long way to deciding who is promoted to the Essex League Premier Division.

Wells are fourth in the table, 18 points behind their weekend hosts, with Southend a further 20 ahead in second.

Hornchurch are runaway leaders of the division, but Johnson believes Wells are involved in a three-way tussle for the other promotion berth.

He said: “It’s a huge game this weekend. Games between us, Shenfield and Southend could decide who finishes second.

“We don’t know too much about Shenfield, but looking at their scorecards in recent weeks, they look strong in both departments.”

Johnson admits he does not know what to expect from the pitch at Shenfield and hopes to speak to the Wells seconds, who visited last weekend.

He also said he believes there could be a deluge of runs, adding: “I think it will suit the batters with its short boundaries. I think it will be a high-scoring game.”
