Ilford were knocked off the top of the Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division table following a heavy loss to Chingford.

The visitors chose to bat first at Valentines Park, but Ashar Zaidi and Theeban Tavarasa claimed early wickets for Ilford.

Chingford captain Alfie Taylor (46) and Rahul Patel (72) combined in a notable stand for the third wicket, with the middle order also chipping in to lift the total to 224-9 at the end of 50 overs.

Haaris Ayub (3-32) finished as the pick of Ilford’s attack, as Zaidi (2-41) and Tavarasa (2-45) nabbed braces.

But Ilford’s batsmen struggled in reply, with Akhil Anil (20) their top scorer as they were dismissed for 131 in the 41st over.

Chingford’s bowling attack conceded a whopping 48 extras, including 25 wides, but Ilford could not capitalise as Patel and Liam Lannen finished with three wickets apiece for the visitors and Taylor took four catches.

Defeat saw Ilford slip to second place, 15 points behind local rivals Wanstead, following their tense win over Brentwood.
