Ilford slumped to a heavy defeat at Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division rivals Chelmsford to drop to fifth in the table.

The hosts chose to bat first after winning the toss, but Theeban Tavarasa (2-14) produced a fine 10-over spell withh the new ball alongside Shane Snater, who went unrewarded, and Haaris Ayub had early success to reduce them to 90-3.

Home captain Jack Sterland held firm to score 86, hitting eight fours, and had support from Oliver Devenish in a 76-run stand as Chelmsford closed on 220-8, with Ayub (3-62) picking up another scalp.

But Ilford’s batsmen struggled in reply, with Essx staffer Matthew Dixon (3-33) making early inroads into the top order.

Ayub (19) top scored as the visitors were skittled for 95 in 30 overs, with Ben Waring (3-14) and Robert Hayto (3-17) combining to good effect with the ball for Chelmsford.
