Ilford claimed a much-needed win over Southend in the Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division.

The hosts chose to bat first at Southchurch Park but Theeban Tavarasa struck early with the new ball and Arshad Haroon (4-40) had success at the other end to reduce them to 60-5.

Kalpesh Chandracant got in on the act with the sixth wicket, before captain Tavarasa (2-28) claimed his second scalp.

And Essex staffer Ashar Zaidi claimed the eighth wicket – ahead of his call-up to the Vitality Blast T20 squad for Sunday’s match against Surrey – before Mohammad Ahktar (2-22) wrapped up the innings on 156.

Ilford lost Ahktar cheaply in reply, but Akash Raji (30) put on 74 with Harsh Kumar.

And Kumar was unbeaten on 52, having hit 11 fours in a 67-ball innings, as Ilford sealed an eight-wicket victory in the 28th over, with Saf Imtiaz hitting six fours in his 30-ball 38 in their unbroken 71-run stand.
