Ahktar’s all-round efforts in vain at Chelmsford

A fine all-round performance from Mohammad Ahktar was not enough to prevent Ilford falling to defeat at Chelmsford in their opening Essex League Premier Division match of the season.

Put into bat at Chelmer Park, Ilford lost Saurav Prabhakar and Akas Raji cheaply, as well as Saf Imtiaz to a first-ball duck.

And when opener Nishad Gabhawala fell for 30, they were in trouble at 50-4, before Ahktar and Haaris Ayub (26) put on 94 for the fifth wicket.

Ahktar hit a six and 10 fours in his 74 as Ilford were dismissed for 170 in the 57th over, with Ben Waring (7-52) doing most damage for the hosts).

Theeban Tavarasa made the breakthrough with the ball for Ilford, after Chelmsford’s openers had put on 58, and picked up two more wickets to leave them 81-3.

But Jack Sterland and James Clifford then moved the total along to 135, before Tavarasa (4-33) claimed another wicket and Ahktar (3-55) also had some success in the three-wicket loss.
