Ilford dug in for a draw against Chingford in their latest Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division outing.

A 97-run stand between Akhil Anil and Haaris Ayub proved vital after they had slumped to 42-6 in reply to Chingford’s 275-7.

Anil hit eight fours in his 49 from 106 balls, while Ayub struck a six and nine fours on his way to 55 from 101 deliveries.

And although both fell in quick succession to leave Ilford 140-8, more tail-end resistance from Shahzad Hafeez and Kalpesh Chandracant ensured the visitors avoided defeat and are left 24 points clear of the bottom two with three games remaining.

Chingford owed much of their dominance on the day to an unbeaten 153 from opening batsman Alex Agedah, who hit four sixes and 14 fours in his 206-ball innings.

Fellow opener Alfie Taylor (21) was the next highest scorer, as Chandracant (2-28) and Ayub (2-72) nabbed braces.

Ilford’s top order succumbed to Matt Smith, who took four early wickets as they collapsed to 28-5.

Ed Smith also got in on the act, before his namesake took a fifth scalp to leave Ilford 42-6.

Smith completed a 6-26 haul when dismissing Ayub, but Ilford held on for seven bonus points in their fight to avoid the drop.
