Essex all-rounder in the runs at Chingford
Ilford had to settle for a draw with Chingford in the Essex League Premier Division, despite more heroics from Essex all-rounder Ashar Zaidi.
Captain Shahzad Hafeez chose to bat first after winning the toss but saw Hamza Muhammad and Mohammed Ahktar fall cheaply to Ryan Harris.
Saurav Prabhakar (29) and Saf Imtiaz (32) got Ilford on track, before both were dismissed by Liam Lannen.
But then Zaidi took centre stage and shared two key partnerships with Akash Raji (42) and Haaris Ayub, who fell one run short of his fifty after hitting a six and five fours in a 45-ball innings.
Big-hitting Zaidi cleared the rope six times and added 11 more boundaries to finish unbeaten on 135 from just 119 balls as Ilford closed on 297-6.
And Chingford were always up against it after the early loss of Hassan Malik to Kalpesh Chandracant.
Zaidi came on as first-change bowler to keep the home side’s scoring in check with his slow left-arm bowling and finished with superb figures of 21-6-38-3.
Ahktar (2-48) and Hafeez also had success with the ball to leave Chingford seven down and Ilford hopeful of another triumph.
But Andrew MacGregor (53 not out) and Lannen frustrated their victory bid and saw Chingford safely to the close at 184-7, having survived a total of 64 overs.
