Valentines Park club indebted to 97-run partnership between Haaris Ayub and Akhil Anil

Ilford captain Theeban Tavarasa praised his lower order for digging in to earn a draw at Chingford in the Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division.

After winning the toss and electing to field, the Valentines Park outfit saw their hosts close on 275-7, despite two wickets apiece for Kalpesh Chandracant (2-28) and Haaris Ayub (2-72).

Ilford struggled early in their reply and, at 42-6, appeared to be heading for a heavy defeat.

However, a stand of 97 for the seventh wicket between Ayub (55) and Akhil Anil (49) steadied the ship for Ilford as they closed on 154-8.

And though Tavarasa was disappointed his side could not make the most of a good batting wicket, he was at least pleased to salvage something from the game.

“It was a good result given that we were 42-6 at one stage in reply,” said Tavarasa.

“It was a good wicket to bat on, so I’m a little disappointed we couldn’t make the most of it.

“I was pleased with how Akhil and Haaris batted at the end for us as they helped us get a draw.

“Looking at the table, we have a decent cushion over ninth place, but we have a tough run of games to come so we are in survival mode now.”
