WANSTEAD’s under-16s side have the chance to add to another piece of silverware to the club’s bulging trophy cabinet at Essex’s County Ground on Sunday, writes Iain Liddle.
The young Herons will take on their counter-parts from Brentwood in the final of the Essex county cricket board’s Matchplay tournament.
Wanstead are the reigning competition champions and their team at the weekend will include a number of players who also featured in last year’s final, including Rehan Hassan, Jonathan Das, Ayush Singh and Kishen Velani.
The club’s first team have already captured the Conference Cup and SNEL League Cup so far this season, and skipper Arfan Akram is hoping the youngsters can add another accolade to the list.
“It is one of the competitions we do take seriously, as much as any other one,” said the skipper.
“I would say the two teams are very evenly-matched and, although we won it last year, I think the fact that it is a final makes it an even game.
“Some of our players played in the competition last year, so have two years of experience in it.
“For me as a first team captain it is a good opportunity to have a good look at some of the players in a big occasion and be able to see if they have that big-game temperament or not.
“Some of the team have played in a national final for the under-15s, but for others this will be the biggest stage they have played on, and possibly will ever play on, so I want to them to go out and enjoy it.”
