Hainault & Clayhall maintained their hold on top spot in Essex League Division Two after a hard-fought win over Loughton.

Zoheb Sharif chose to bat first at Oakfield, but fell after hitting three early boundaries and saw Mousshin Ismail (25) and Omar Akram (27) follow him back as the hosts slipped to 69-3.

Matthew Worsnop (22) put on 58 for the fifth wicket with Dominic Hurst, who hit a six and eight fours in his 73 from 80 balls before falling to Abdul Nasir (6-34) as Hainault were dismissed for 231 after 46 overs.

Arshad Mughal struck early with the ball in Loughton’s reply, then ended a 52-run stand for the second wicket and completed a 4-29 haul to leave the visitors 76-4.

Sharif (2-34) and Ryan Hurst (2-46) had success in the middle order, as Loughton tried to keep up with the run rate, and there was one wicket apiece for Sam Shirzay and Worsnop as Hainault clinched a 22-run win with an over to spare.
