Skipper issues rallying call ahead of Gidea Park tie

Fives & Heronians captain Ben Britton has called on the team to keep their Essex League Division Two title challenge in their own hands ahead of Saturday’s clash at Gidea Park & Romford.

Following a victory in their previous outing, Fives currently sit 24 points clear at the summit with six games remaining in the season.

But Britton insists the players must still give it their all in every fixture as they look to secure a return to Division One.

“We’ve got to keep the gap there and keep our fate in our own hands. We can’t afford any slip-ups,” he said.

“We were fortunate a few weeks back when we were the only team in the league to win with every other game washed out.

“You don’t know when something like that might happen again so you have to keep winning.”

When Fives hosted Park earlier this year, they cantered to a 113-run success, but Britton believes it will be a tighter affair this time around.

He added: “They always seem to play well against us.

“They know how to play on their own track so there will be an advantage for them in that.

“We want to improve on our batting because it wasn’t great in our last game and that will help our cause.”
