Centurions set up Essex League Division Two success
Centuries from Pete Kilpatrick and Gary Norris helped Fives & Heronians to victory over Old Brentwoods on the first day of the Essex League Division Two season at The Paddock.
Fives captain Jake Poulter put the visitors into bat after winning the toss, but Ramesh Gunalan and Nazim Hussain put on 77 before Sarfaraz Ahmed made the breakthrough.
Poulter struck moments later, but Baber Choudhary helped add 69 for the third wicket before he was run out by Terry Ballard.
And Gunalan went on to reach a superb 142 off 105 balls, having hit eight sixes and 15 fours, before he was dismissed by Stuart Knapman to leave Brentwoods 205-5.
Knapman (4-57) and Ahmed (2-48) had further success as the visitors were dismissed for 255, but Fives lost Ballard and Fahad Iqbal cheaply in reply to fall to 17-2.
Kilpatrick and Norris combined for a 166-run stand to get them firmly on track, though, before Gunalan claimed his third wicket.
After hitting a six and 12 fours to reach 100 off 102 balls, Kilpatrick was the man to fall, with Poulter following soon after to leave Fives 192-4.
Norris kept going, though, and was unbeaten on 113 from 109 balls, having hit no fewer than 20 fours, as Michael Batt blitzed an unbeaten 30 off 16 deliveries to seal a six-wicket win.
