Essex bowler Sam Cook took the wicket of England captain Joe Root first ball, but claimed he was ‘probably more excited’ by scoring his first Championship runs on a day when 22 wickets fell at Chelmsford.

Yorkshire were skittled for 50 after choosing to bat first, with Cook (5-28), Peter Siddle (4-7) and Jamie Porter sharing the wickets.

But Essex lost Alastair Cook and Tom Westley to ducks and slipped to 12-3, before Dan Lawrence (48) led a recovery.

Simon Harmer (36) also scored vital runs, with Cook unbeaten on three as the innings ended on 142.

Cook said: “I was probably more excited by that. It was the highlight of my day!

“No, it’s obviously a great feeling to get the England captain. I’d be lying if it wasn’t a good feeling. It was nice to get those wickets first up and put us in a good position.

“The wicket definitely did improve through the day and we didn’t expect it to have improved that quickly. But as Jonny [Bairstow] and Harry [Brook] proved there, if you get in on that wicket you can cash in. It definitely looks as if the wicket’s getting better.”

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow was promoted to open Yorkshire’s second innings and scored 50 off 44 balls, with Brook unbeaten on 57 as the visitors closed on 161-2.

Cook added: “Jonny came out and played really, really aggressively which is different to the approach they took in the first innings.

“They are in a strong position, we know that, and we have a lot of work to do and a lot of cricket left to be played in this game. We’ve got to scrap hard and work really hard for the next couple of days if we’re going to come out on top.

“I think we were a little taken aback to be honest not to be batting first today, that’s for sure. But it has proved now that it is a good wicket, did a little bit early on, and we like to bowl first at Chelmsford. Yes, we were a little surprised to be bowling – but we were certainly pleased to be bowling first.”
