Woodford Green were put to the sword by Essex League Division Three rivals Leigh as they suffered a 244-run defeat at Chalkwell Park.

The hosts chose to bat first after winning the toss, but Jack Cossey struck early with the new ball.

It proved a false dawn as Kevin Sargent (64) and Paul Humphries put on 120 for the second wicket, with Dean Waller (37) then dominating a 53-run stand.

Nabeel Tariq ended Waller’s innings, but Humphries then had support from Joe Sexton (51) in a 104-run partnership, before Cossey (2-42) claimed his second scalp.

Leigh closed their 48-over innings, held up briefly by rain, on 303-5 as opener Humphries carried his bat for an unbeaten 102 from 152 balls, with 10 fours.

And Green saw only openers Nathan Onojaife, Jagdeep Chaggar and Ashish Rai reach double figures as they were skittled for 59 in 21.1 overs.

Theodore Foley (4-26) and Alex Camp (4-27) did most of the damage for Leigh.
