Essex’s Ashar Zaidi helped Ilford thrash local rivals Upminster by 119 runs to get off the mark in this season’s Essex League Premier Division.

The talented all-rounder showed his ability with the bat first of all before claiming five wickets with the ball.

Upminster captain Matt Tigg won the toss and decided to bowl first and it proved to be a good decision first of all.

Tigg dismissed Ilford opener Saurav Prabhakar for just two and John Curtis bowled Kalpesh Chandracant for one.

But Hamza Muhammad (30) stood strong, although when he was caught – the hosts were 39-3.

Fortunately for Ilford, Zaidi was the next man in and together with Saf Imtiaz put on 153 for the fourth wicket.

Essex’s Zaidi smashed 90 from 97 balls, hitting nine fours and two maximums before Tigg (3-59) got him out.

Imtiaz added an unbeaten 51 off 108 balls and Ilford declared after reaching 196-4 off 55 overs.

Upminster made a poor start in reply with Julian Whetstone going early, but James Evans and Shafiq Rahman appeared to rebuild.

The pair put on 34 for the second wicket, but Evans dismissal after a 46-ball 15 saw the visitors lose wickets at regular intervals.

Shahbaz Butt went for three before Rahman (26) joined him back in the pavilion and Upminster couldn’t halt the momentum.

Zaidi caused havoc and finished with 5-36 from his 21 overs while Theeban Tavarasa showed his class with 5-21 from 17 overs to hand Ilford a first league win of 2017.
