Aron Nijjar led with bat and ball as Wanstead had the edge in a rain-affected draw at defending Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division champions Chelmsford.

The visitors were put into bat at Chelmer Park and lost Hassan Chowdhury and Kishen Velani early on to find themselves 23-2.

Nijjar put on 54 for the thid wicket with Arfan Akram (31) and hit six fours during a 95-ball innings before falling four runs short of his fifty.

Captain Joe Ellis-Grewal (28) was the only other batsman in double figures as the Herons reached 173-9 from 50 overs and saw Zain Shahzad made the breakthrough with the ball during the home side’s reply.

Essex staffer Nijjar (5-24) and fellow left-arm spinner Ellis-Grewal (3-65) worked their way through the rest of the Chelmsford batting order to reduce the hosts to 151-9, but last man Karan Shah survived one ball before rain stopped play in the 41st over.

Wanstead took 11 points, as Chelmsford claimed eight.
