Ilford eased to a crushing 10-wicket win over Premier Division strugglers Southend at Valentines Park to ensure their own safety.

Visiting captain Joe Robbins chose to bat after winning the toss but the move backfired in spectacular fashion as Hussnain Kazmi (2-21) took two wickets in three balls and then saw Theeban Tavarasa strike with successive deliveries to leave them 11-4.

Tavarasa added two more scalps to make it 23-6, before Sam Rowe and Shaun Grant managed to frustrate the hosts for a while.

Both fell to Tavarasa, who finished with figures of 16-8-18-6, before Essex all-rounder Ashar Zaidi (2-16) took two wickets in three balls to wrap up the innings at 62 in the 33rd over.

Ilford openers Mohammad Ahktar (34 not out) and Kazmi (29 not out) wasted little time in reply, combining for 14 boundaries as the home side raced to their target in just 44 balls.

Victory leaves Ilford 37 points clear of the relegation zone with one game left.
