Hainault & Clayhall fell to a rain-affected defeat on their return to Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two at Colchester’s Castle Park.

Put into bat, they saw rain stop play in only the third over and lost more than an hour of action, with the overs reduced to 38-35.

Irfan Shah hit three fours before he was first to fall after the restart, while captain Zobie Sharif struck eight fours in his 50 from 64 balls and put on 63 for the second wicket with Mo Ismail (26).

Both batsmen fell without addition, but S Medhi (24) and Rameez Rehman (21) helped lift the total to 152-9.

Veteran Arshad Mughal and Medhi struck early to reduce the hosts to 30-2, but Jack Hebron then joined Greg DeSilva in a 113-run stand for the third wicket to take them to the brink.

Hebron hit a six and 10 fours to reach 69 off 50 balls before falling to Sharif, with DeSilva unbeaten on 69 from 53 deliveries, after hitting 10 boundaries, as Colchester clinched a seven-wicket win in the 21st over.
