Hainault & Clayhall moved nine points clear at the top of the Essex League Division Two table with victory over Wickford.

Captain Zoheb Sharif chose to bat after winning the toss but fell cheaply and saw Sagar Joshi follow to leave the home side in early trouble at 7-2.

It looked like the decision had backfired as Hainault collapsed to 42-5, but Matthew Worsnop (36) put on 78 for the sixth wicket with Dominic Hurst.

And Hurst went on to reach 65, hitting a six and seven fours, before Etinder Bopara added a quickfire 44 off 38 deliveries.

Bopara struck four sixes and three fours in his knock and John French (20) helped Hainault reach 203.

Wickford looked well placed at 101-1, when Worsnop took their second wicket.

Sharif (4-35) and former skipper Ryan Hurst (3-53) turned the screw as they worked their way through the batting order and, after the last-wicket pair had put on 27 to keep hopes alive, Hainault sealed a four-run win.
