Two-day friendly ends in stalemate

Essex drew their two-day friendly with Middlesex, who reached 328-7 in reply to the home side’s 370-7 at the County Ground.

Ryan ten Doeschate declared overnight, allowing his bowling attack a full day in the field.

And the Dutchman used 10 different bowlers, with teenager Aaron Beard (2-63) and Jesse Ryder (2-42) nabbing a brace of wickets apiece.

Matt Dixon, David Masters and Tom Westley also had some success with the ball, while Middlesex opener Sam Robson fell one run short of a century after hitting 20 boundaries.

Robson shared notable stands with Paul Stirling (51) and Dawid Malan, before John Simpson and James Franklin put on 71 for the fifth wicket.

Middlesex reached 240-5 with 15 overs left to play, before Ollie Rayner hit an entertaining unbeaten 47 to help lift their total over 300.

The two sides are due to meet in a Twenty20 match today (Wednesday), with play getting underway at 11am. Entry is free.
