Browne’s half-century leads way in chase
Essex got their County Championship Division Two campaign off to a superb start as they completed an emphatic 10-wicket win over Gloucestershire.
Needing just 59 runs to complete victory on the final morning of their four-day match at Chelmsford, they eased to their target as South Woodford’s Nick Browne and England Test captain Alastair Cook extended their unbroken opening stand to 94 runs.
Left-hander Browne, after a first innings failure, hit nine boundaries to finish unbeaten on 55, from 79 balls and Cook was 35 not out having hit five fours.
Victory saw Essex as the first county to record a win this season and they will look to build on their fine beginning when they visit Sussex at Hove in their next match, which starts on Sunday (April 17).
