In an article from our ‘Howzat’ pullout, chairman Irfan Shah looks ahead to the upcoming season for Hainault in Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One
Irfan Shah says Hainault & Clayhall are aiming to win promotion from Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One in their first season back at this level.
The Jack Carter Pavilion outfit returned to the second tier after winning the Division Two title last term.
The title success was the start of the road back for Hainault as they look to return to their glory days, having previously been an established club in the top flight.
Another promotion this term would see them achieve that aim, and chairman Shah hopes the club can maintain their upward trajectory.
“We lost our way a few years back. We last won the Premier Division in 2006 and then seemed to drop off after that,” he said.
“When we found ourselves in Division Two, it seemed to wake us up as a club.
“At Hainault, we are a club that needs to keep progression and we want to maintain the buzz around the club after last season.
“We have to target promotion and we will see if that is a realistic aim once we’ve played everyone in the league once.
“We know it won’t be easy, but we have to be ambitious and push ourselves.”
Long-serving Shah also revealed the Hainault squad has not changed much following promotion last season.
Overseas player Matt Worsnop is the only player who featured for the first team last summer not to return for the upcoming campaign.
And Shah believes that the lack of alterations for the squad bodes well for the season ahead.
“We have a similar squad to last season with Matt’s departure the only real change,” he added.
“Things are looking good and the boys are keen on having another successful season this year.
“Availability is always an issue for any club, but hopefully we won’t be without our key players for the big games.
“Whether we win promotion or whether we struggle all depends on how hard we train and how hard we work this season.”
Hopefully it is another year of success for Hainault.
