Hainault & Clayhall came up well short in their Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One contest with Colchester on Saturday.

The visitors chose to bat first after winning the toss, but Sadaif Mehdi reduced them to 36-3 on his way to a five-wicket haul.

Simon Fernandes (31) and Ben Robinson (39) put on 72 for the fourth wicket, before falling to Zoheb Sharif (2-42) and Sagar Joshi respectively to leave the visitors 120-5.

But contributions from Ollie Lovejoy and Denson Narayan (both 34) helped lift the total to 217 in the final over, as Mehdi finished with 5-55.

Hainault lost Joshi and Etinder Bopara cheaply in reply to find themselves 26-2, with Sharif the third man out with the total on 52.

Mousshin Ismail made 31 as Hainault slipped to 94-7, before Ryan Hurst and Mehdi combined in a 46-run partnership.

Both fell with the score on 142, though, as Hurst hit a six and five fours in his 37 from 44 balls, before Colchester wrapped up a 62-run win in the 45th over.
