Latest observations from our Ilford Catholic blogger
Sorry Sachin – but you’re in the 4ths this week…
With the second weekend of practice matches played minds now turn to selection for the upcoming league games and captains face the unenviable task of choosing a balanced side.
Various factors are involved in the selection process, but unlike the England set up, laptops with the latest stats and analysis are slammed shut, closed down and unplugged.
The first question on the minds of the selection committee is always – who can drive?
If Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar were looking for a game but didn’t have wheels they would have no chance of playing for the 3rds away at Rickling Ramblers.
Instead Big Harry who has a dodgy knee and can’t see properly out of his left eye would get the nod, and be immediately confirmed.
He drives a people carrier – he’s a shoo-in.
“I’m sorry Sachin, but you’re in the 4ths this week at home.”
All aspects of travel, organisation and running of the day have to be considered as captains are bombarded with more texts, phone calls and emails than FTSE 100 company.
So by the end of the week drivers are sorted, lifts arranged, pick-ups confirmed. But the minute the teams are emailed round, pinned to noticeboards, published on the website and tweeted, the first email appears on the iphone - “I’m really sorry for the late notice.”
Friday night and Saturday morning drops outs are the curse of any skipper, met with frowns and expletives and usually punishable by death. Or moaning. Which is often worse than death.
And then the Saturday morning texts have to be sent out. “Sachin – any chance you can get to Rickling by train?”
