Hockey call-up set for under-16 trials at Lilleshall

Two Chigwell School students have been invited to feature in England under-six trials after a series of eye-catching performances.

Conor Caplan and Will Godfrey recently represented the Saxon Tigers hockey team – a combination of selected players from the South East and East of England –at the Futures Cup.

The cup is English hockey’s flagship tournament for elite junior performers and is held annually in Cannock.

The Tigers played three other regional squads where they had an 8-1 win over Pennine Pumas and a 5-1 victory against Wessex Leopards.

However, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mercia Lynx earlier in the tournament resulted in the team finishing second overall.

In addition to providing the boys with an opportunity to complete against the best players in the country, the tournament is also used as a selection event for national age group squads, namely England under-16s and 18s.

Both Caplan and Godfrey, playing at inside forward and full-back respectively, produced several eye-catching displays throughout, including the latter scoring in successive games.

Their performances did not go unnoticed by the selectors with both boys being invited to attend England under-16 trials at Lilleshall National Performance Centre on Saturday, November 26.
