Barkingside manager Steven Le Sage is looking forward to returning to the Oakside Stadium to face his former club Redbridge in the Len Cordell Memorial Cup.

Side make the short trip on Saturday to take on George Christou’s side as they both look to build on their opening victories in the group stages of the cup competition.

Le Sage was previously the manager of the Motormen reserves before taking over at Barkingside and he has yet to come up against them since leaving.

“I’m really looking forward to going back to Oakside to face Redbridge,” Le Sage said. “This will be my first fixture again the club since I left the club, which makes it extra special.

“I still have so much affection toward the club, Ricky Eaton and the other members of the club that were a massive support to me when I was part of the club, so I’m really pleased to have the privilege of facing the club, especially in a competition in honour of Len Cordell.

“There is also a history between the two clubs and we have quite a few of our team that has previously played at the club and had the pleasure of meeting Len Cordell, so I think that will add to the occasion as well. It’ll be another massive test for us and hopefully we can put in a good performance.”

Barkingside sealed a 4-3 victory over Woodford Town as Coles Park Stadium in their opening fixture of the competition.

Joe Gent opened the scoring for Side in the 11th minute before Reece Simpson made it 2-0 two minutes later.

Jayden Charles pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half-time to reduce the scoreline to 2-1 heading into the break.

Jack Gibbons and Jacob Dingli both netted early in the second-half to make it 4-1 to Barkingside.

Charles struck again for Woodford and then Ridwan Hussein stepped up to find the back of the net, but it was too little, too late for the hosts as it ended 4-3.

“We were really happy with the result. It was a good test for us and we showed we were more than capable of competing.

“I felt that the lay-off from playing would lead to it being an open game, and it was.

“There was a lot for us to improve on, but we expected that so we’re not being too critical of our performance - just enjoying being back playing.”
