Barkingside manager Matt Frew is hoping the 3-2 victory against Heybridge Swifts on Monday night will help turn his team’s season around.

The Oakside outfit secured their first win in nine outings and wrecked Heybridge’s 11-game unbeaten run thanks to Brian Suchley’s double and a goal by Matt Toms.

It came just two days after a disappointing 3-1 home defeat by Burnham Ramblers, in which Frew admitted his players “just didn’t turn up”.

But with a trip to Aveley up next on Saturday, the boss expects his Ryman One North team to match the standards set against Heybridge.

Frew said: “We’ve set a benchmark and if we play like that we can certainly get a good result at Aveley.

“A result like Monday’s can turn our season around.

“We were the underdogs and I don’t know if Heybridge just thought it would be a walk in the park.

“But we matched them and could have won by more.

“Hopefully this result will instil confidence and belief in the players.

“But if we produce that kind of work-rate in every game then I’ll be a happy manager, whatever the result.”

With Chas Liddiard and Toran Senghore unavailable, Frew pushed Suchley into attack and his faith was rewarded when the regular centre-half opened the scoring with a long-distance effort from the left.

The visitors replied through Terry Amass with a deflected shot just past the half-hour mark.

Amass struck again just before the hour but Barkingside quickly leveled through Toms following a corner.

And with 12 minutes remaining, Suchley bagged his second to seal a crucial victory for the hosts, much to Frew’s delight.

He said: “Brian Suchley can play in a lot of positions and is just a great all-round footballer.”

“I made several changes to the team, some of which were forced, but it worked wonders.

“It was more like the Barkingside I know and a total contrast to the previous performance.”

Frew was less than impressed with his side’s dismal display on Saturday, with Andy Edmunds scoring a late consolation after Samuel Mead, Billy Hunt and Charlie Kirby had put Burnham three goals ahead.

He said: “We were second best for 90 minutes and just didn’t turn up.

“I threw the kitchen sink at the players again and made it clear that some of them are playing for their futures at the club.”
