Stuart Bennett enjoyed a top 10 finish for the Ilford AC walking team at the latest event in the Enfield Five Mile League.

The latest event took place over five one-mile circuits of King George V Playing Fields in Enfield, with Ilford fielding a depleted squad owing to a variety of reasons.

In unexpectedly mild conditions, coach Bennett fared the best of the Ilford contingent as he came eighth overall after clocking a steady 51 minutes and 16 seconds.

Bennett was followed closely by stalwart Dave Kates, who placed 12th after recording a time of 52.14.

In the women’s race, Ilford’s Janice Bentley-Pearson showed best with a deserved sixth spot having finished in 55.26.

Close behind were Anne Scurfield in11th and Lesley Morris in 12th after clocking 59.36 and 59.37 respectively.

Scurfield and Morris also achieved Race Walking Association five miles-in-an-hour awards in only their third competitive appearance over the distance.
