Ilford AC pair Declan Cullen and Anna Crawley were among around 1,000 runners who took part in the Victoria Park half marathon on Good Friday.

Though the course was mainly flat and the rain held off, the race consisted of six-and-half laps of the park.

With the course containing tight turns, setting a new best was always likely to be tricky.

Cullen, returning from injury, started the race optimistically, but soon slowed down and settled in to an eight-minute-mile pace.

The Ilford man was able to maintain this pace for the remainder of the race, despite his injury flaring up again in the last five miles.

Cullen finished in a time of one hour, 41 minutes and 26 seconds to place first in his age category and 187th overall.

Crawley, meanwhile, ran a more relaxed race, supporting a friend who was running her first half marathon.

The Ilford runner came home in a time of 2:02.14 to place 500th overall at the event in Victoria Park.

Elsewhere, a number of Ilford youngsters opened their 2018 track season at the Woodford Open Meeting.

Aaron Hick, competing at under-11, had a busy day as he placed third in the long jump (3.27m), the 600m (2.11, PB) and 75m.

Six Ilford athletes took part in the various 800m age-group races, all setting new bests, with Matthew Hick (2.32) and Farris Patel winning their respective races.

Ryan Holeyman (2.38), Bradley Deacon (2.17) and Aaron Samuels (2.00) all came second in their respective races, with Jak Wright (2.09) also running an 800m race.

In the sprints, Mario Dobrescu, an under-15 athlete, won his 100m race with a new best of 11.55, before clocking 35.83 in the men’s 300m event.

Jordan Akinpelu won his 200m race (24.95) after placing fifth in the 100m (12.25), with Daniel Popoola also winning his 200m race (24.49) after coming third in the 100m (11.87)

There were new 200m bests for both Ayshe Lawrence (29.65) and Ellie Wright (27.39), who won her race.

Jasmin Martins (28.31) and Esmeralda Mengeyele (28.86) were also in 200m action, while Eshimu Massamba ran a new 400m best of 61.36.
