Athletics: Ahmed Abdulle wins home race for Ilford AC, while Patrick Brown is fatest at Newman Hilly Five for East London Runners

A round-up of the latest athletics news from the borough

Ahmed Abdulle was at home in a senior field as he won the Newman Hilly Five, which was hosted by Ilford AC.

The 17-year-old saw off the challenge of club mate Tom Gardner, finishing 40 seconds ahead of his fellow Ilford runner in 26.57.

Alex Richards, also of Ilford, was fourth in 28,43, while Steve Philcox (30.07) and Andy Catton (36.10), both scooped the supervet prizes in the MV40 and MV50 categories.

The Ilford men continued to place well with Paul Holloway, Sam Rahman, Usamah Patel, Robin McNelis and Kevin Wotton inside the top 20 as the men’s team emerged victorious.

The women fielded a weakened side because of volunteering duties and injury, but Bree Nordin led them home in 37.10.

Julia Galea (45.50), Carol Muir (49.46) and Nichola Fairburn (49.52) made up the rest of the scoring squad who came sixth.

At Jarman Park, Steve Uttley won the 2k walk in the final SCVAC match, clocking 11.11 in the over-35 race.

Henry Ricketts was third in the 200m in the same age group in 27.4, while Catton clocked 12.11 for the over-60s 3k steeplechase.

Gary Floate was the fastest for Ilford at the Sri Chinmoy 5k in 20.16, ahead of Philcox, (17.37), Steve Parker (22.10), Dianne Crisp (24.27), Julie Gillender (28.24) and Pam Jones (31.17).


Patrick Brown led the charge for East London Runners at the Newman Hilly Five, finishing as the fastest club man in 29.29

Brown was followed by Daniel Lee (31.13), Aaron Browne (31.24), Dan Senior (31.34), John Booth (32.00), Scott McMillan (32.26) and Shaun DeSena (46.25).

Ava Lee led the women home in 34.14 on her birthday, with Eleanor Wilkinson (37.52), Natasha Tweedie (39.03), Suzanne Bench (40.09), Sally Faulkner (55.19) and Sonia Cheadle (55.49) following.

The club also saw Ciaran Canavan (20.08), Daniel Slipper (19.28), Craig Livermore (21.31) and Browne (18.40) place eighth overall at the Great Team Relay 4x5k race in the Olympic Park.
