Fenn’s Foxes return from two-week break

Ilford manager Alan Fenn says his Essex Senior League hopefuls are ‘raring to go’ this weekend after not playing for two weeks.

Fenn’s Foxes return to action with a trip to Southend Manor on Saturday, having not played since their FA Cup exit against Stanway Rovers on August 29.

And the boss feels they have used the break positively, saying: “We’ve used this two-week period as a mini pre-season. The boys are feeling sharp and are buzzing to get back out there Saturday. They’re hungry!”

Ilford played a friendly last weekend and ran out 4-0 winners against Tilbury’s under-21s, with the returning Chris Lockwood scoring twice.

“We got a lot out of Saturday’s friendly,” added Fenn. “Firstly, fitness and sharpness. We had a few key players coming back and played 90 minutes.

“I think it was an ideal run out for the boys. It was good to see Lockwood back, and on the scoresheet.”

Fenn is expecting a tricky test against Manor and praised their players, but he was less than complimentary about conditions at their ground.

“Southend have improved since last year, they have three very technically gifted players,” he added.

“The problem playing them is that their pitch is the worst in the league! It’s like a park. We won 3-1 last season and I’m confident we can do the same again.”

The Foxes have little time for rest as they play again on Monday when they travel to Mile End Stadium to take on Tower Hamlets in another tricky looking game.

“Playing anyone in midweek is always tough, especially after playing Saturday,” added Fenn.

“Tower Hamlets have started decently and they have some very good young players. It won’t be easy.”

“But, the boys are in great shape. They look after themselves on and off the pitch, they’re a great bunch.

“I’m targeting six points from these two and I’m confident we can achieve that. If we do, I’ll be over the moon, I’m looking to continue our unbeaten run.”
