Tory MP for Woodford Green Iain Duncan Smith has backed Theresa May's call for an early general election, saying "she has made the right choice".
She said: “I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election.”
Mrs May had previously said she would not call an early election.
Mr Duncan Smith commented: “At the moment we’ve got a government that was elected before the referendum and right now peers in the Lords there’s a lot of talk about blocking it.
“She’s right to get out and get a mandate. We want to get on with it (Brexit).”
Mr Duncan Smith, who was reelected in 2015 with a majority of 47.9 per cent, said Mrs May had proved to the country that she is a strong and competent leader.
He denied that the prime minister had called the election in the wake of polls putting Labour 21 points ahead of the Conservatives.
“It’s not about that it’s about electing a government with a strong mandate to get on with Brexit.”
Mrs May needs to get a two third majority in Parliament, for the election to go ahead.
Jeremy Corbyn has said Labour will vote for the snap poll on June 8.
