Ilford South MP Mike Gapes is at the heart of a Twitter storm this morning (Tuesday) after saying Labour had no “credible leadership”.

Mr Gapes, who has been a Labour MP since 1992 and was re-elected with an increased majority in May, said in a damning critique: “There is now no collective shadow cabinet responsibility in our Party, no clarity on economic policy and no credible leadership.”

His comment – which follows a meeting of the parliamentary Labour party last night (Monday) – has caused a stir, with commentators citing it as a sign of discontent among backbenchers.

Mr Gapes was quickly inundated with Corbyn supporters questioning his loyalty and supporters praising him for speaking up.
