Ilford's Labour MPs Mike Gapes and Wes Streeting increased their majorities, as did John Cryer in Leyton and Wanstead, while Iain Duncan Smith held Chingford and Woodford Green.

In Ilford North, one of the tightest marginals in London in 2015 when it was decided by just 589 votes, Mr Streeting was able to increase his majority to almost 10,000.

He once again defeated Conservative Lee Scott, who had been the MP there for 10 years prior to 2015’s general election.

Although a much safer seat to begin with, Ilford South’s Mr Gapes ensured that his 25 years as an MP in the area did not come to an end. He returned a staggering 43,724 votes, more than 31,000 more than Conservative rival Chris Chapman.

In Chingford and Woodford Green there were some nerves early on for former pensions secretary and Conservative MP Mr Duncan Smith, but he was able to hold his seat, albeit with a lessened majority.

And last but not least, in Leyton and Wanstead Labour came in with almost 70pc of the overall vote and ensured that Mr Cryer would be returning to Westminster.
