Former foreign secretary David Miliband has recorded a special video message of support for Ilford North's Wes Streeting.
In the video, the former foreign secretary, who was once bookies’ favourite to lead the Labour Party, urges the voters of Ilford North to back Labour candidate Mr Streeting on June 8.
He said: “I’ve known Wes Streeting for about 10 years. I think he’s a real star, but a star of a particular kind, because his feet are so firmly planted on the ground of Ilford North.”
Mr Miliband went on to praise Mr Streeting’s record of campaigning on local issues such as the potential closure of King George Hospital’s A&E and the funding crisis in local schools.
He continued: “Parliament needs people like Wes Streeting.
“People with genuine local commitment, with independent spirit that allows them to speak their mind on behalf of their constituents, but also a global vision of what’s right.
“Everyone knows that the election in Ilford North is going to be close. I hope you’ll support Wes Streeting so that he can continue his tremendous work on behalf of the people of Ilford North.”
And the incumbent Ilford North MP was thrilled to receive Mr Miliband’s seal of approval.
“I greatly admire David Miliband for the international leadership he has shown on some of the biggest challenges facing our world, so I’m proud to have his support in this video message to Ilford North residents ahead of June 8,” said Mr Streeting.
“During my first two years in Parliament, I’ve been a strong voice for human rights and democracy around the world.
“I’ve also voted in favour of measures to keep our country safe, from renewing our nuclear deterrent to giving our security services the powers they need to tackle the rapidly changing risks posed by organised crime and global terrorism.
“If I’m re-elected to Parliament on June 8, I will continue to provide a strong internationalist voice for Ilford North as our country charts its course through this turbulent and uncertain century.”
